Submissions for our:
For our first issue, we decided to go the spooky route, but with a twist: let's think about all those well-known halloween & horror tropes and turn them on their head--the zombie, the witch, the vampire, the ghost--how are these familiar tropes intrinsically connected to mental illness/health? For example, the zombie could easily serve as a prototype for the over-medicated, the vampire as chronic insomniac, the ghost as a stand-in for personality disorders or the personality post-trauma. They're all there, standing in the shadows, so let's reach out and begin to imagine for them a better, creepier, sadder, madder, and important worlds beyond the cheap glare of the Walgreens or Wal*Mart Halloween $9.95 section. We want writing that isn't afraid to creep and crawl amongst the neurons of our minds, we want writing that transforms the trope, somehow, to inform us of more important, more essential issues than merely being afraid of the dark. We want writing that has fun, that's playful in its treatment of our Hallow's Eve theme, and writing that's got soul and spark as well as spook.
